The Ties That Bind

The Ties That Bind charts the 150 year history of Jewish people in BC. Since the earliest arrivals during the Gold Rush of the 1850s, our community has had a storied past. Features on specific families, businesses and organizations are interwoven with introductions to Jewish traditions and historic artifacts.

Leonard Frank: An Enterprising Life

Twenty-four year old Leonard Frank arrived in Alberni, BC in 1894 with dreams of striking it rich in the booming gold town. The son of one of Germany’s first professional photographers, Frank didn’t anticipate that he would find success in the same trade as his father. Over the next fifty years, Frank’s photography took him to the far corners of BC, capturing incomparable images of remote mountains and rivers, the rough living of the logging and mining industries, and the construction of the young city of Vancouver. This exhibit pairs Frank’s biography with selections from the logging and mining photos taken during his early career.

Bridges of Light: The Photography of Leonard Frank and Otto Landauer

For over 80 years, Leonard Frank and his successor Otto Landauer documented life in British Columbia, from the province’s early prospecting era to the thriving metropolis of Vancouver. Some of their most breathtaking photographs are those documenting the construction of the bridges of Vancouver. The Lions Gate Bridge, The Granville and Burrard Bridges, The Pattullo and Second Narrows Bridges. These and many others link the region and allow us to move freely in an area criss-crossed by the Fraser River. Bridges of Light draws from the JMABC archives collection of Frank and Landauer photos, pairing the most dramatic of their bridge construction photos with biographical information about the photographers and information about the bridges.

Fred Schiffer: Lives in Photos

Arriving in Vancouver in 1958, Fred Schiffer quickly became the city’s most sought-after portrait photographer, welcoming four decades of Vancouver’s leading cultural, political and industry luminaries to his studio or photographing them in their homes or offices. This exhibit pairs these stunning portraits with others taken in Buenos Aires, where Schiffer and his family lived for ten years after fleeing wartorn Europe.

Home Away From Home: BC Jewish Summer Camps

Three summer camps have served the BC community for over 70 years, providing children and youth with a safe, comfortable place to explore their Jewish identity and learn about their heritage. Featuring archival photos and oral history excerpts, Home Away From Home traces the history of these camps and their role in local cultural preservation.
