Jewish Museum and Archives of British Columbia
Job title: Food Programs Coordinator
Duration: 30 hours per week, Monday – Thursday for 20 weeks, occasional weekend work will be required
Start and end dates: Mid-October 2020 to approximately February 28, 2021
Hourly wage: $18/hour
The Jewish Museum and Archives of BC is dedicated to the collecting and sharing of community memories of Jewish life in British Columbia. Through innovative exhibits and programming, the JMABC builds bridges with the diverse communities of BC and heightens awareness of the rich 150+ year history of Jews in BC.
Founded in 1971 as the Jewish Historical Society of BC, the JMABC collects and cares for documents, artifacts, photographs and oral histories chronicling all facets of our community’s history. Our archives are housed in dedicated facilities and comprise over 325 linear metres of textual records, 325,000 photographs and 900 oral history interviews.
In 2017 the JMABC embarked on a comprehensive program: Feeding Community. Feeding Community consisted of many elements, including a podcast (the Kitchen Stories), special events, partnerships, and the incredibly well received Chosen Food Supper Club. In 2020-2021 the JMABC plans to produce a second season of the Kitchen Stories podcast series, furthering discussion on the interconnected themes raised in the original series: tradition, diversity, and equity in the context of Jewish food.
The YCW Food Programs Coordinator will serve as producer of this podcast series. They will take responsibility for brainstorming topics and guests, securing and carrying out interviews, and editing each episode. In this work they will consult regularly with the JMABC Director of Community Engagement, who will provide support and guidance. The Food Programs Coordinator will liaise closely with representatives of organizations within and beyond the Vancouver Jewish community, and will be expected to be a respectful and positive representative of the JMABC. The Food Programs Coordinator will seek and pursue sponsors interested in supporting the series.
If the current public health situation improves sufficiently, and it is deemed safe to do so, the JMABC will consider hosting public gatherings as part of Feeding Community. The Food Programs Coordinator will play a key role in developing and producing these events.
Through this work, the Food Programs Coordinator will have the opportunity to explore not just the Jewish community, but diverse ethno-cultural communities of BC, as the JMABC is passionate about celebrating the ethno-cultural diversity of BC through innovative programming.
This hands-on experience from brainstorming to final reporting will provide a very unique opportunity for a recent graduate to experience innovative public programming within a community institution from beginning to end, while also reviving a much beloved podcast series that built meaningful connections among participants and listeners.
The ideal candidate for the YCW Food Programs Coordinator will have:
